Is a Dental Crown on an Implant Removable or Permanent?

The great thing about a dental crown on an implant is that this dental restoration looks and feels amazingly natural. In fact, this is the closest you will ever come to an alternative for your real teeth. If you do not want to wear dentures, talk to your dentist about a dental implant. For this, you have several options, including permanent and removable.

Choosing the right material for a dental crown

One of the first decisions a patient needs to make has to do with the material. For this, one can opt for a dental crown made of porcelain or porcelain infused with metal. Because the all-porcelain crown looks the most like real teeth, it is the costlier option. If budget is a concern, patients could go with a metal-infused crown. When properly placed, this too looks great. However, it is common for some of the metal to show near the gumline.

Removable or permanent dental crown

Another benefit of a dental crown is that people can choose either permanent or removable. A dentist makes a recommendation on this based on each patient’s needs. As part of the decision-making process, the dental professional considers several factors. Following are those deemed the most important.

1.Missing teeth

The number of missing teeth a patient has is one factor. When someone only has a few gone, the dentist would likely suggest the permanent solution. However, this depends on the condition of the remaining teeth. For someone with a lot of missing teeth, it usually makes more sense to go with a permanent dental crown. The dentist performs an examination to determine this.

2.The patient’s preference

Whenever possible, a dentist will go with the type of dental crown the patient prefers. Often, younger people prefer the permanent option. Not only does this give them gorgeous teeth, but it also eliminates any concerns of their teeth falling out. Permanent crowns also look more natural compared to the removable type. That does not mean removable teeth are bad, just not as good for a lot of people.

3.Required support

For someone to end up with a permanent dental crown, the dentist would insert titanium rods. However, for the implant to work, bone, soft tissue and the rod’s surface must all fuse. Typically, this takes between two and six months to complete. As part of the dentist’s examination, they will determine if a patient’s mouth can support permanent crowns. If not, dentures might be the only alternative.

4.Cleaning and maintenance

Something else worth noting is the difference in cleaning and maintenance between the two options. A removable dental crown is much easier to deal with compared to a permanent one. In this case, the teeth simply snap in and out of place. That allows the patient to remove them for thorough cleaning. With a permanent dental crown, an individual must brush and floss often. A dentist would likely recommend using a water cleaning device as well.

Making the decision

As you can see, you have two great choices. To ensure you select the right one, talk to your dentist. Together, you can go over all the pros and cons of each dental crown. Keep in mind that while different, both produce beautiful teeth and smiles.
